An Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) mechanic is an individual certificated under 14 CFR Part 65 to perform maintenance and preventive maintenance on civil aircraft and to return them to service. The Inspection Authorization (IA) is an additional rating that authorizes A&Ps to perform 100-hour and annual inspections, approve major repairs and major alterations, and perform progressive inspection rotations. A&P certificates do not expire but require currency for return-to-service privileges. IA must be renewed every 24 calendar months (March 31 of odd-numbered years).

Frequently Asked Questions

How does someone become an A&P mechanic?

Two paths: (1) Attend an FAA-approved Aviation Maintenance Technician School (AMTS — typically 18-24 months); (2) Document 30 months of practical experience (18 months single rating) under a certificated mechanic, get experience verified on Form 8610-2, then pass three FAA written exams (General, Airframe, Powerplant) and an oral and practical exam by a Designated Mechanic Examiner.

What can an IA do that an A&P cannot?

An A&P performs maintenance and preventive maintenance and returns aircraft to service for those tasks. An IA additionally: performs 100-hour and annual inspections, approves major repairs and major alterations on Form 337, and performs progressive inspection rotations. The IA is the typical authority required for routine annual inspection signoffs on light aircraft.

How is IA renewed?

Every 24 calendar months under Section 65.92. Renewal options: (1) Activity — performed at least 1 annual inspection, completed 1 progressive cycle, OR completed 2 major repair/alteration approvals, AND attended an FAA-approved IA seminar; (2) Activity alternative — 4 annual inspections OR 8 major repair/alterations in 24 months; (3) Examination — oral test by FAA inspector. Most IAs use the activity-plus-seminar path.

Does an A&P certificate expire?

No. The certificate itself does not expire. However, exercising the privileges requires either recent work (at least 6 months in the preceding 24 months) or operating under supervision of a current A&P. The certificate can be revoked only through FAA enforcement action for cause.
