How this was made

  • Sources: FMCSA Company Census File (az4n-8mr2) and Vehicle Inspection File (fx4q-ay7w) on data.transportation.gov.
  • Window: roadside inspections dated October 26, 2024 to October 25, 2026. The latest inspection in the file was October 25, 2026. Data pulled October 28, 2026.
  • Carriers counted: active USDOT number, interstate operation, authorized for hire, 5 to 50 power units, more trucks than buses, and a physical address in one of the 50 states or DC. That is 66,936 carriers.
  • An inspection counts as out of service when the inspection file records an out-of-service total above zero (driver, vehicle or hazmat). The rate is out-of-service inspections divided by inspections.
  • A state is the carrier's home state on its registration, so a carrier based in one state and inspected in another counts in its home state.
  • A state with fewer inspections has a less stable rate. Read small states with the counts beside them.
